It is exciting to see South African schools beginning to implement e-learning into their curriculums. e-Learning not only makes teaching more efficient for teachers, there are multiple benefits for learners as well. What kid wants to carry around a bunch of textbooks when they can have all of their textbooks on a tablet/iPad?

There are many things for a school to consider when choosing an e-learning platform.

Laerskool Stellenbosch, a public primary school situated in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, began thinking about the implementation of e-Learning about 4-5 years ago. They did not just want to jump into the world of e-learning blindfolded. So, they decided to visit a few schools in the Gauteng region who had already implemented e-learning into their curriculum. The purpose of these visits was to discover, as far as possible, what the challenges of e-learning are, prior to implementing themselves.

There were some important requirements that the e-learning partner needed to meet before they would implement e-learning.

  1. Students should be able to access all the information they needed in one place. They did not want to use a platform that had many separate apps – this would be confusing, especially for primary school learners;
  2. The network must be robust – students should only have access to information uploaded by the teacher, for example;
  3. The transition from the old way of teaching to e-learning must be easy and seem effortless for the students and teachers alike.
